The Odyssey is Yours Now

The Odyssey is out in the world.

After years of dreaming, doubting, writing, rewriting, reimagining, and holding this music close, it’s finally out in the world. That’s terrifying to me. And remarkably freeing.

This is the kind of creative project that feeds my soul. And this was also a spiritual project. These six songs were forged in moments of disorientation and rediscovery—in silence, in distortion, in grace that didn’t always feel like grace.

I didn’t make The Odyssey to explain theology. I made it to live with it, to live in it. To ask hard questions. To stretch & explore what faith can sound like. And to offer something honest enough that maybe someone else might find space in it too.

Gratitude

I didn’t make The Odyssey alone. And I don’t just mean that others helped—I mean it wouldn’t exist without them.

First, I’m grateful to God. I know that’s the expected thing to say with a project that claims to be “Christian Rock,” but it’s not said lightly. The small persistent nudges that stirred these songs to life, those nudges are the same presence that carried me through writing them, wrestling with them, recording them, and releasing them.

I want to thank the musicians who gave this EP its pulse and its rhythm and its grit and its texture:

  • Cam Rhodes on bass (and no small amount of inspiration), Chris Knight on drums, Christine Mocha and Zach Rhodes on background vocals.
  • And to Jeff Berkley for mixing and Robb Robinson for mastering—thank you for giving these songs the weight and clarity they needed.
  • I’m also grateful to Mikey Setzer, who began work on this project and whose early help gave me the courage to keep going. I hold that inspiration and encouragement with grace. And friends—if you want to hear more of his work, check out Beatdown Saints!

To Bishop Dottie and Bishop Sandy—thank you for your pastoral presence and encouragement throughout this journey.

To Pastor Tara, who took the reins at La Jolla UMC so I could step away for renewal, writing, and recording—I can’t thank you enough for that gift. And to the congregation at La Jolla UMC who continued to support me while I was on leave: this record carries a sliver of your generosity in every track.

To my dad and my two sisters—thank you for always believing in me, and maybe even believing bigger than I did.

To my kids (I know, I already mentioned them), who lent their musicianship and their hearts—thank you for being part of the soul and part of the sound. And especially for being part of my heart.

And to my beautiful wife Kimmie, who has seen more of this journey than most, and still chose to walk it with me—thank you. Your presence is in this project in ways that can’t be listed in credits.

There are other stories I could name here—chapters that carried… a lot. While I simply can’t name all the names, I will name the truth: Some of the support that helped me get here came from inspiration, from love, from grace… and some came from complicated places. I’m grateful for what all was given, and I carry it near.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a bit more on each track—what shaped them, what they hold, and how I hope they speak. Thank you for being part of this. However you arrived here, I’m grateful you’ve found your way in.

May grace meet you somewhere in the sound, somewhere in distortion, somewhere real.
